Wedgwood Jasper-Dip Heart Box Friendship 1 (Warewish)
1. Friendship Consoling Affliction — A Story of Compassion The
central relief, Friendship Consoling Affliction, presents a tender
Neoclassical allegory: one female figure offers comfort to another
who is suffering. The subject transforms sorrow into an image of
friendship, sympathy and consolation. Wedgwood recorded this
design in its 1787 catalogue as No. 240, “Friendship consoling
Affliction,” identifying it as a design by Lady Templeton.
Examples of the motif survive in museums, including the Art
Institute of Chicago, where a jasperware example is dated circa
1785–1790.
「Friendship Consoling
Affliction(友誼撫慰苦難)」是一幅充滿溫柔情感的新古典主義寓意圖。
Wedgwood
Lady Templeton

2. Lady Elizabeth Templetown — The Paper-Cut Artist Behind the
Relief Lady Elizabeth Templetown (1747–1823), born Elizabeth
Boughton and later Baroness Templetown, was an accomplished
amateur artist. She was particularly known for intricate cut-paper
designs, which translated beautifully into Wedgwood’s white
bas-reliefs. Museum records identify her as the designer of
numerous Wedgwood jasperware subjects, while the Fitzwilliam
Museum lists Templetown, Elizabeth, Lady as a creator associated
with Wedgwood works.
Elizabeth Templetown
Wedgwood
Jasperware
William Hackwood

3. Cobalt Blue Jasper-Dip — Colour Created by a Thin Surface
Layer Jasper-Dip is one of Wedgwood’s most ingenious ceramic
techniques. Instead of colouring the entire clay body, the surface
of a pale jasper body was stained with coloured slip; cobalt
produced the characteristic deep blue. A major historical account
records that jasper-dip was introduced in 1777 and that it allowed
exceptionally delicate and refined visual effects. During the
1780s and early 1790s, it was widely used for important ornamental
pieces.
Jasper-Dip

4. A Small Jewel Box, a Large Piece of Wedgwood History This
heart-shaped antique jewel box measures approximately 10.5 × 8.0 ×
4.0 cm. The bottom shows the "WEDGWOOD / ENGLAND" mark, and based
on the evolution of the Wedgwood mark, it can generally be
identified as a work from 1891 to 1908, while the decoration
deliberately revives an eighteenth-century design by Lady
Templetown. The remarkably fine applied reliefs, floral border and
deep cobalt-blue ground make this a particularly charming example
of later Wedgwood Jasper-Dip. More than a century old, it seems to
preserve not only jewellery, but also a vanished language of
craftsmanship—where light, shadow and relief could make porcelain
almost breathe.
Wedgwood
Lady Templetown
Wedgwood

< Key Historical Details of This Collection >
Here is a fact-check of the historical description, verified item by item:
1. Symbolism & Visual Description
Artistic Meaning / 畫面含義 "Friendship Consoling Affliction" is indeed a classic Neoclassical allegorical scene.
According to the collection description from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A Museum), the scene features a female figure representing "Friendship," gently leaning down to comfort another woman in a low posture who represents "Affliction/Grief." Personifying abstract emotions like friendship and sorrow was a major artistic tradition in the late 18th century.
2. Catalogue Number & Designer Attribution
In the historical book Wedgwood and His Works, compiled by Wedgwood expert Eliza Meteyard, this design is explicitly recorded as: "No. 3. Friendship consoling Affliction... From a design by Lady Templeton. Stands No. 240 in the sixth edition of the Catalogue, 1787."
Friendship consoling Affliction... From a design by Lady Templeton. Stands No. 240 in the sixth edition of the Catalogue, 1787.」
This confirms that in the 6th edition of Wedgwood's official catalogue published in 1787, Entry No. 240 was indeed this precise artwork, explicitly acknowledging Lady Elizabeth Templetown as its creator.
